Song Review // 2020-09-03

Enslaved

Utgard

Jettegryta

Vocals

The growling vocal has a wind-like feel to it. I think it is the way he holds it. The singing vocals are fine.

Music

I find the feel of the music reminds me of a storm during the fast parts. There is a drastic change 3/4 of the way through. It felt like I was listening to a completely different genre for less than a minute. They must have wanted to change the mood. Thankfully, they got back to the other feel.

Lyrics

I wanted to know if the name of this song meant anything. Apparently, it translates to "Giant's Cauldron" and refers to cylindrical holes in large rocks created naturally, when water runs over it for long periods of time. According to Norse Mythology, giants made these cauldrons to cook on.

This song is clearly speaking about this very thing.

Makes me this of a board game I like to play called Rampaging Jotunn. Each player tries to protect their viking village and destroy the other's. They both have to watch out for the destructive Jotunn.

The quiet forest
Before man came
Secret time
Before time
Giants' steps thunder
Upon the mossy ground
Carving a hole
In ageless stone
