Song Review // 2020-12-16

Respire

Black Line

Cicatrice

Another band that are my fellow Ontarians!

I think the name of this song may be referring to the scar of a wound that has healed.

I just have to say, if you haven't heard this band, do yourself a favor and watch their video for this song. It adds to the experience!

Vocals

I often don't like when there is more than one vocalist. I think the vocals work well together in this one. I like both of them, the deep growl and the higher pitched scream.

Music

I just love how a violin has really found its place in this song! Adds a layer of sadness. It doesn't end there - they brought several non-traditional instruments to this song. I think it is a cool idea. Maybe there are a tonne of bands that do this and I just live under a rock, but I enjoyed it.

I like the dynamic changes in the song as well. Contrast makes me happy!

Lyrics

I think this song is talking about the rough places that you can find yourself. It is being compared to an abscess. The reality is if you have something stuck in your skin and it is festering, it needs to be removed in order for healing to occur. I think this song is recognizing that even after removal and "healing" there is a substantial scar left. There are things that can't fully change and be as they were.

Abscession - this flesh rots hollow
The earth spoils it sickly black
Transference and waiting rooms

And all that still grows, a wallow
The branch yearns for something else
Transcendence and exit wounds

This life drags fast
Like sand fall between our hands
We touch and fade, Our hearts won't beat in time
