Skunk Anansie

Post Orgasmic Chill

We Don't Need Who You Think We Are

I am not sure how I missed this band. This is a first for me.

Vocals

These vocals go from somewhat bluesy, to a more screamy vocal. Made me think of Janis Joplin during some parts, although this vocalist goes much higher. She seems to be putting it all in.

Music

I like the contrast in the music. It would feel too rock-oriented without the dynamics.

Lyrics

I don't enjoy when songs use derogatory words. I understand that this song is making a point. They went there. This song takes the fact that black people were - and still are - treated as less than. So wrong, but yet still reality!

God licks your face
'Cause we don't need
Who you are
We don't need
Who you are
'Cause we don't need
Who you think you are

This line about God licking your face may be basically putting a person down with the dogs that lick as a part of their communication, cleaning. It could be taken further as an unwanted touch or disrespect to someone. It is literally putting your saliva on someone's face. The mention of God here may be referring to the idea that even God would lick this person's face. Ultimate disrespect.

Starve the minds and drain the face
Segregate shit nigga race
Cry for credible debate
But now them blackies legislate

The history of segregation was not all that long ago.
