Song Review // 2020-12-03

Zeal & Ardor

Wake of a Nation

Tuskegee

Vocals

The vocals are confusing to me. I was getting used to this screechy vocal and then the singing voice came in. It surprised me, but also felt so wrong! They just don't go together. The singing voice doesn't fit.

Music

Some decent guitar riffs, the drums are moving things forward. The music turned into a weird mixture of radio music and heavier music half way through. Not something my ears understand.

Lyrics

This song is an example of how music can paint a picture of history, of an experience that matters. This isn't just crap spewed out for no reason.

I am going to admit that I was completely ignorant about what took place with Tuskegee people. I looked up the word since it is the title of the song. The lyrics make total sense here since this group of people were told that they had bad blood and needed treatment. The health care people involved, however, had a different agenda. They were actually using this group of people to experiment on. They were not informed of the fact that they were actually trying to learn about syphilis. This situation was very much an illustration of the lack of respect and equal treatment for this group of people.

Bad blood
We're ripped from the tree
Bad blood in me
A simple word
Tuskegee

Cry, dear boy, these helping hands aren't at your aid
Fly, people, I'm telling you it's been to late
Pure evil, the doctor hides a vicious smile
Upheaval, one day we shall retaliate
